Michael’s story:

41 years of age 

Before the 2020 lockdown Michael had regularly attended our circuit and boxercise sessions at a local park. During lockdown, like many people, Michael led a more sedentary life and his weight increased. With a number of his family members suffering with a heart condition Michael knew that he needed additional support to help him loose weight, get strong and create a healthier lifestyle.

Background: 

Michael works in an admin role for a private hospital. He moved to his current position 12 months ago and was really enjoying the challenges of the new role but but finding it difficult to prioritise his own health and fitness. He was aware that he was becoming less active and was keen initiate a healthier and more energetic lifestyle..

Michael’s Fitness Objectives:

  • To lose weight

  •  Improve heart health

  • Gain confidence in his new work environment

Nourishment objectives: To develop an understanding of how to eat for long term health, particularly heart health.

Overall aims: To reach a healthier weight, to improve heart health and blood pressure.

The Three Pillars of Fitness solution: Exercise, Nourishment and Mindset

Mobility: Following a movement assessment it was clear that Michael needed to work on mobility before anything else. Michael carries a lot of tension in his shoulders, lower back and hips.

Movement: Together we developed a simple mobility sequence that Michael could do daily, to reduce tension and move on to body weight exercises such as dead bugs and body weight bridges.

Hydration: Whilst Michael did not drink huge quantities of tea or coffee, he was a big fan of hot chocolate, and would have several cups a day at his desk. Our priority was to increase the amount of water that Michael drank. Initially Michael found this switch fairly difficult, but he is now drinking 2.5 litres of water per day and, having seen the benefits this brings, specifically in terms of his ability to concentrate on office tasks, he is hoping to increase the amount of water he drinks to 3 litres. Michael’s body now holds less toxins, experiences less tension and is more energetic for work and exercise..

Nourishment: Michael kept a simple food and hydration log, which really helped him to build awareness of food choices, with an initial focus on eating more fruit and veg we moved on to proteins and fats, to build a wide ranging eating style. We also introduced fermented foods, including sourdough and live yoghurt to help with bloatedness and constipation.

Mindset: Like all of my clients, I check in with Michael every week, we have a call every Friday where we talk about the week and any challenges he may have faced. We also check in via e-mail each Wednesday to keep communication open and make changes where necessary. “For many years I have struggled with being Autistic and creating a lifestyle which is specific to my needs. Your coaching has helped me to develop my own lifestyle and become more confident at work.”
