Mary’s story:

52 years of age

Background:

Having spent many years working on cruise ships and travelling the world, Mary had spent much of her younger years in a bikini, always happy with her shape, however this changed once she met her Husband John, settled down and had her Daughter Maurika. As Maurika grew up Mary worked in various desk bound, school based jobs, with these roles being sedentary she found herself quickly gaining weight.

When we first met to discuss her goals Mary said “I am fed up with looking in the mirror and seeing an out of shape middle aged Women!”

Mary’s Fitness Objectives:

  • To improve self confidence

  •  To change shape/ composition

  • To improve strength particularly around the core.

Nourishment objectives:  To eat mostly whole foods which support consistent energy levels. Back to basics!

Overall aims: “To get back to fitness, and enjoy it. To lose weight if I can?!”

The Three Pillars of Fitness solution: Exercise, Nourishment and Mindset

Movement: Mary was walking her dog “Gilly” daily and attending a weekly Zumba class. After an initial consultation we agreed 2 x 45 minute PT per week would provide the right level of support and accountability, as Mary began her new fitness journey.

Hydration: This was a challenge, as Mary liked tea and coffee but wasn’t so keen on water. Mary used the water reminder app (free from iTunes and Google play) to help remind herself. If you’d like to use the same app, use the link below:

Nourishment: Mary was comfortable with using kitchen scales to portion food and record it using my fitness pal, so this was the strategy that she chose. I would look at her logs 2 or 3 times each week and offer feedback and suggestions for improvement, as well as being at the end of the phone if she had a question.

Mindset: From our first meeting it was clear to me that Mary was holding on to her memories of younger years and the frustration around what she now saw in the mirror was growing. As part of our coaching I encouraged Mary to explore these feelings and acknowledge the progress that she was making. Mary’s weekly check in’s showed improved health scores almost every week and she became more comfortable and confident with her shape and her feelings. This is reflected in the “health score” below.

The system that I use to assess health is comprehensive and includes: Exercise, Nourishment/ hydration, Mindset, Stress, Sleep and feelings.

Outcomes:

Total inches lost:  15

Weight lost: 2kg

Health check in score: 46 out of 50

Andy’s reflections: As with a lot of my clients, Mary was unhappy, this was not just in her shape and fitness but also in her “self talk” and relationship with herself. It was a pleasure to support Mary in changing shape but some of her biggest progressions came from the Mindset work that we did. “Mindset work is as important as muscular work!”

“I can’t believe how my shape has changed, I have lost a combined 15 inches! my confidence, sleep, energy and mood have shot up!”
